**Note**: Cytologic examination for malignant cells may be performed on ascites (fluid that has accumulated in the peritoneal cavity in excess amount) or the fluid (saline) that is introduced into the peritoneal cavity, and then removed by suction. The introduction of fluid may be termedperitoneal washing or peritoneal lavage.
